In the beginning…

Quote: I won’t be wronged, I won’t be insulted, and I won’t be laid a hand on. I don’t do these things to other people and I expect the same from them.”
John Wayne as John Bernard Books in “The Shootist”.

I guess this is more or less the code I have lived by all my life with out having heard it put into words until I became a fan of John Wayne films.  Yeah…I know what people say about his politics, and that his movies were not what we’d call politically correct by the “standard” of today’s overly polite society.  But has anyone else noticed that the country is going to hell?  No one says “Thank you”, holds a door for the elderly or those of the feminine persuasion?  We’ve dumbed down our schools, and don’t discipline children, but rather accept mediocrity and all it has to offer in its wake.

Well maybe…just maybe…if we really look at the characters of a John Wayne film we’d find that America has in fact lost its way by not being a bit more like those characters.  For instance, how many times in the aforementioned films was somebody shot who either didn’t deserve to “pay-up”, or at least it was a last resort?  I seem to recall most of those characters as being very human, and generally having integrity, honesty, and they lived by a “code of standards” that most of society is sorely missing today.

We no longer require people to “pay-up” and take responsibility for their actions.  Where the hell is our brain today?

Well, anyway, I tell my lovely wife of 7 years that I guess I’m just a fossil…a dinosaur if you will.  I am blessed with a wonderful wife, our black lab “Bear” and many wonderful family and friends who I am loyal to , and they reciprocate.

I mean what I say, and say what I mean.  I’m direct and live by my “code” which has served me pretty well of four decades.

I’m turning 40 this year and feel a little weather-beaten, but overall I hope to have another forty years or so to go.  The first 40 went fast and I have been lucky enough to survive my own stupidity, and cravings for the next challenge.  Thus this blog will be hopefully not a diatribe about John Wayne, righteousness, or the lack of common sense and integrity, but hopefully a look at the funny side of these things and many more.

I hope to share, for those who stick around to read these posts, a bit about my experiences in the first forty years, and look ahead to the next.  I hope to share a little of the “Uncommon life of a common man”.

Thanks for reading and enjoy.
